Renaming Instances and the VM Within

We have a user who is renaming his VM. But the only thing being renamed is the Display Name. The actual “Name” field is greyed out when you click Edit, leaving only the Display Name editable by the user. As a result, we have something being displayed “Foo”, with the Instance Name being “Bar” and the underlying VM name as “Bar”. Further complicating matters, is that his operating system hostname is “boofar”. vCenter is showing the name has “Bar” which matches the Morpheus VM Name.

I thought - and I need to check this - that if you were running VMWare Tools on a Linux VM, the operating system name of the VM got propogated to vCenter.

It looks like in Morpheus we can edit the Instance Display Name - but not the name.
It looks like in Morpheus we can edit the VM and edit the name, but - is this only in Morpheus? A VM Name change does not attempt to push said name change to vCenter, right?

  • In my testing I was able to edit the name and display name of a instance from the Morpheus UI.
  • Note: Instances are a Morpheus concept and and don’t actually exist in vCenter.

  • Once the cloud syncs it will be changed to match what is in vCenter.

  • That is correct. You would need to change the name in vCenter manually or create a task to update the vm name in vCenter.

Its possible this can differ on older versions of Morpheus
